5 out of 5 stars the best tip by far   August 11, 2010
Megan Rust (Port Townsend, WA)
I just finished BALANCE IN MOVEMENT and it has given me much to think about, and practice. The best tip from the book is the one that says that any problems you are having with your extremities--your hands, your legs, your head--are due to an uneducated seat. Fix the lack of an "independent seat" and everything else falls into place with little work. Without an independent seat, your body compensates in other ways, doing all the things you're trying to erase from your body's memory bank. The shoulders slump, the back hollows, the seat bones point forward or backward, all the things you KNOW are wrong. If you do NOT have an independent seat, no gadget nor exercise will have lasting benefit. Don't waste you money on the latest "shoulders-back" gimmick, spend your money wisely and buy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginning Dressage Riders   August 9, 2010
Debra Weber
I was both impressed and disappointed in this video. It was much too basic for me and I bought it based on excellent reviews from other customers. I found it slow and not what I had anticipated; too much at introductory level for one who has had many years of classical dressage background. That said, it would be great for anyone wanting to review basic seat, leg and hand work.

5 out of 5 stars Technical reading   September 16, 2009
Riding Mom (FL)
As someone who has been riding for a while but who feels like I am somehow "missing" some of the directions, this book has made a lot of sense. It is quite a technical read but pulls together all of those vague comments you get from instructors like "shoulders back" or "look over his ear" and explains the "why's" behind them. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand how their body influences the horse.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book!   April 7, 2008

This is a very informative book with an in depth look at the rider's conformation and anatomy. Very well written and extremely useful for instructors and students alike! It is also recommended reading for the USDF Instructors Certification program.
DVD
The book and video are a perfect marriage! This video was shown at my USDF Lungeing workshop for the Instrucors Cert. Program and I had to own it! Excellent demos on position faults and several exercises on how to correct. Beneficial for both the instructor and the student!!

1 out of 5 stars Balanced Riding - Not   October 25, 2007

This dvd bares no resemblance to book by the same name. It shows nice video of riders walking along trails and short footage of riders riding well, but the rest of the dvd is comprised of demonstrations of riders riding poorly in an extremely exaggerated manner. There are few demonstrations of the techniques in the book that would be of any use to a rider trying to improve. Not worth the price and not even worth the cost of shipping.
