Product Description

Every year, thousands of horses are retired from the track. By and large, these are healthy, fit horses that remain sound in body and mind and can be retrained to become wonderful dressage horses, hunters, or pleasure mounts. This comprehensive guide gives horse owners advice on a wide range of subjects, from therapies for rehabilitating injured racehorses, to establishing welcoming environments and training regimens, making the transitioning process from racehorse to riding horse trouble-free.

I recently adopted a OTTB and while seeking advise, this book was recommended by every single person I asked! Many things are now making sense to me about my big beautiful boy! Very well written for every level of trainer/owner.

Lots of helpful information and detailed pictures. Definitely recommend to anyone interested in adopting an OTTB. This book gives you a good idea of what you're getting yourself into.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Morgan Ford left nothing out of this book!   October 18, 2008

This is the most extensive resource on the subject of retraining OTTB's that I have ever seen. She misses nothing - from extensive explanations about their previous training, to trailering home from the track, to letting down, feeding, shoeing, turnout, tying, common problems and injuries.....and on to early training and transitioning into their new discipline. There is not a better book out there. I will only be happier with it if she writes a companion book for transitioning Standardbreds!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for the OTTB owner   August 16, 2008

This book is an excellent resource for the new OTTB horse owner, or even an experienced horse owner with their first OTTB. Anna Ford does an excellent job at describing the life of the OTTB at the track and gives step by step information on how to help the OTTB transition to a new career. It made the transition for my new OTTB mare smoother, and she is turning into a nice riding horse.
